Most ab exercises work both the abs and the lower back. It’s just how they are done. You are doing them right it’s just that you use both muscle groups during the exercises.

Usually, if the neck and back hurts, it’s because of an incorrect form. And usually, it’s the one where people put their hands behind their heads and jerk themselves up instead of using abs. I like doing some of my ab work on an exercise ball - it helps with form and reduces neck/back strain.

Try doing a situp, but instead of having your knees bent, keep your legs straight and on the ground. This helps me.

maybe it’s the other way around: you have back problem undiagnosed way before you started your ab exercises. everyone is always advised to seek your doctor’ permission before doing any exercise regime.
the abs and back are related because to strengthen one’s back, ab exercises are done.
pain is normal after exercises, but if it lasts for like two days or more then the pain significantly tells you that either you’re doing your exercise in a wrong way, or you really have a back problem and you have to seek medical attention.

They say if you work on abs you should work on back muscles as well. These compliment each other. However, if you experience a lot of pain often enough, you need will need to find a different way to work on your abs. I experienced back pain so much from working on abs that now I use one of those inflated balls instead of a mat to work out on. It is WAY better!

Can’t wait to see the answer to this as mine hurts too, I went to my GP and she told me I should try doing pilates first to straighten my spine??? Unfortunately, can’t afford gym or pilates class so am waiting on freecycle to see if anyone is getting rid of a pilates dvd so I can try it at home, I’ll keep my eyes on your question, I might benefit too from the answers you get, sorry I wasn’t much help.

you are doing them wrong. it is very easy to use your back muscles in a lot of ab exercises. you need to make sure you are using just your ab muscles or you wont see results as fast either. you can get a waist trimmer belt to help, they have them at walmart in the exercise section. it is a rubber belt that wraps around your abs and helps you shed water weight, but it also helps stiffen your back so that when you do exercises you use your abs and not your back. when you do crunches and sit ups makes sure your abs are pulling you up and make sure its not your back muscles pushing you up. trust me you will feel it when you do them right. it will be a lot harder.
